Mistake #1: Collecting certifications instead of building skills

CompTIA Security+, CEH, CISSP - certifications have value. But too many people treat them as a finish line. Hiring managers have seen thousands of Security+ holders. What they remember is the candidate who walked in and explained how they set up a home lab, detected a simulated intrusion, and documented the whole thing.

Certifications open doors. Skills get you hired.

Mistake #2: Applying without experience

"But how do I get experience without a job?" This is the catch-22 everyone hits. The answer is: create your own. Home labs. Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions. Open source security projects. Internships - even unpaid or low-paid ones - that give you real environment exposure.

Experience doesn't have to be paid to be real.

Mistake #3: Going it alone

Cybersecurity is a field built on community. The people who break in fastest have mentors - people who've already navigated the hiring process, know which skills actually matter, and can make introductions. A warm referral from someone inside a company is worth 100 cold applications.

Mistake #4: Waiting until they're "ready"

There's no moment when you'll feel fully ready. Start applying at month 3 or 4 - not because you'll definitely land something, but because the interview feedback teaches you what to focus on next. The market tells you what's missing faster than any study plan.
